Once a year, the UN Climate Change Conference brings all signatory parties together - hence the English name "Conference of Parties" (COP) - to push forward joint measures to combat climate change. Because the 25th edition of the COP could not take place in Chile as planned because of political unrest, the approximately 25,000 participants gathered in the Spanish capital Madrid in December 2019.
On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, we were commissioned to design the German pavilion in the associated exhibition space. As it was left unclear whether and if the COP 25 would take place, the entire planning and logistics of the 150 square meter stand had to be moved from Santiago de Chile to Madrid within a few weeks.
The stand itself was deliberately open and communicative. Multiple seating and resting possibilities, including its own coffee bar, faithfully presented the motto "Speeding Up Climate Action" and provided moments for exchange and networking. In the lecture area, visitors also had the opportunity to inform themselves in up to four daily sessions about both the Federal Government's and civil society's current projects and partnerships.
