That the BMAS building in Wilhelmstraße is steeped in history is clear to anyone who enters it. It is all the more exciting that structural changes are currently being made to the building. Part of the new building, which can be easily seen through large window fronts facing the street, will serve as a visitor centre in the future. Between June 2019 and September 2020, facts and fiction has worked with the BMAS to develop an exhibition that will be open to all interested citizens.
The task was not an easy one: We presented 70 years of German social history in five milestones of labour and social policy - from trade unions to migration, equality and old-age security to inclusion. The milestones are based on the fundamental idea that political progress only comes about through exchange with an engaged population. Thus, the exhibition can also be read as a call for political participation.
This basic idea is continued in the design of the exhibition. The milestones are equipped with various media that encourage visitors to interact: sound recordings from the post-war period, a quiz on the women's movement or a graphic novel on the history of the guest workers. This makes the exhibition equally accessible to a broad target group, from school classes to senior citizens' associations.
The exhibition will open after the lockdown in 2021.
